How to Get to Taioha'e
Taioha'e is the main settlement on Nuku Hiva (Marquesas) and is reached almost exclusively by Air Tahiti flights from Papeete (Faa'a). Inter-island services are limited, so plan connections carefully and expect irregular schedules and higher fares than continental domestic flights.
Nuku Hiva Airport (NHV): Nuku Hiva (Taioha50) has a small airport with connections operated by Air Tahiti from Faa’a (Papeete, PPT). Flights are infrequent and seasonal; flight duration from Papeete is around 3-4 hours including possible island hops. Expect domestic fares on inter-island flights to be significantly higher than mainland domestic flights - check Air Tahiti for current tariffs and schedules.
Faa’a International Airport (PPT): Most international visitors arrive at Faa’a (Papeete) on Tahiti and then connect to Air Tahiti flights to Nuku Hiva. Allow at least a day to connect because inter-island flights are limited; plan itineraries around the published Air Tahiti schedule.
Train: There are no train services in the Marquesas; inter-island travel is by air or sea.
Bus / Road transport: On Nuku Hiva (Taioha50 / Taioha’e bay) local road transport is limited to taxis, rental 4x4s and occasional buses or shuttles between villages. Upon arrival at Taioha’e harbor or airport you can use local taxis or pre-arranged transfers to reach town or lodgings; check with accommodation for pickup options.
