Best Time to Visit Atuona #

Aim for the dry season (May-October) for calmer seas, steady trade winds and easier hiking. The wet season (November-April) is greener but hotter, rainier and more insect-prone.

Wet Season
November - April · 24-30°C (75-86°F)
Hotter, wetter months bring lush green valleys and roaring waterfalls, but expect heavy showers, humidity and increased insect activity-boat crossings more unpredictable.
Dry Season
May - October · 22-28°C (72-82°F)
Calmer, sunnier weather ideal for hiking, snorkeling and village visits; seas are smoother and fewer mosquitoes make outdoor evenings pleasant.
Trade Wind Season
May - October · 22-28°C (72-82°F)
Steady southeast trade winds bring cooler nights and consistent surf; great for sailors and wind-sports, though some hikes can be wind-exposed.

How to Get to Atuona

Atuona is on Hiva Oa in the Marquesas and is reached by Air Tahiti flights from Papeete (Tahiti). The island has no rail infrastructure - arrivals transfer a few minutes from the tiny airport to town by taxi or on foot.

Hiva Oa / Atuona Airport (AUQ): The island’s airport is located just outside Atuona and is served by Air Tahiti from Papeete (Faa’a, PPT) on Tahiti. Flights from Papeete are infrequent and typically operate a few times per week; check Air Tahiti schedules. The airport is a very short drive to Atuona town - around 5-10 minutes by car or taxi.

Faa’a International Airport (PPT), Tahiti: International flights arrive into Papeete; to reach Atuona you must connect via Air Tahiti domestic services to AUQ. Allow plenty of connection time in Papeete for the domestic check‑in and luggage handling.

On the island taxis and rental scooters or cars are the usual ways to move beyond the village; plan extra time for inter‑island travel due to infrequent departures.
