Tabriz Citadel (Arg-e Tabriz) is a large historic fortress in the city of Tabriz in northwest Iran, notable as a surviving medieval citadel and urban landmark. The structure dates back to the medieval period and served as a fortified municipal and governmental centre.
Built of brick with massive defensive walls and internal chambers, the citadel has been damaged and repaired repeatedly over centuries, including substantial destruction from earthquakes and urban development. Parts of the original complex remain as ruins and preserved sections that illustrate the scale and form of a historic Iranian citadel.
Over time the site has been used for administrative, military and civic functions and has been the subject of conservation and partial restoration efforts. The citadel lies close to Tabriz’s old bazaar area and major historic streets in the city centre.
