Tabora Travel Guide
City City in Tabora, known for its agriculture
In Tabora, colonial-era buildings and a dusty railway station recall its caravan-trade past; visitors come for local coffee, nyama choma at open-air markets, and to trace Nyamwezi culture toward nearby miombo woodlands and traditional villages.
Why Visit Tabora? #
Tabora’s history as a central trading crossroads remains visible in its colonial-era buildings and the old Central Railway station, which hint at the town’s role in East African commerce. Coffee and tobacco markets still shape the local economy, and nearby woodlands and savanna offer simple natural escapes. Travelers interested in African trade history, regional markets and low-key cultural encounters will find an off-the-beaten-track gateway to Tanzania’s interior.
Who's Tabora For?
Tabora is a classic overland hub in western-central Tanzania: cheap guesthouses near the station, vibrant markets and a laid-back pace suit budget travelers. It’s a practical stop on long east-west routes across the country.
As a regional administrative and trading centre, Tabora supports commerce in agriculture and timber; traders and NGOs use its basic conference facilities and transport links to surrounding districts.
Tabora is a launch point for remote overland adventures-long drives to Katavi or Ruaha are possible from here, and local hires take you into miombo woodland for camping and wildlife viewing if you’re prepared for rustic travel.
Miombo woodlands, riverine areas and woodland birdlife around the region reward travellers interested in off-the-beaten-path nature watching. Expect simple trails and rustic guides rather than polished eco-resorts.

How to Get to Tabora
Tabora is primarily reached by domestic flight (Tabora Airport, TBO) or by long‑distance rail and bus on the Central Line and regional routes. International travellers typically change in Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere Airport) and then take a domestic flight, train or bus into Tabora.
Tabora Airport (TBO): Tabora has a small domestic airport (TBO) a few kilometres from the town centre. From the terminal you can take a metered taxi into town for roughly 5,000-15,000 TZS (≈USD 2-6) and 5-15 minutes depending on traffic, or a boda‑boda (motorcycle taxi) for about 1,000-3,000 TZS and 5-10 minutes. There is limited luggage handling and no formal shuttle service, so agree the fare before you leave.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR): For international arrivals most visitors fly into Dar es Salaam (DAR) and then take a domestic flight to Tabora when available; scheduled domestic flights (Air Tanzania and other operators when running) take about 1.5-2 hours and typically cost in the range of 250,000-700,000 TZS one‑way depending on season. If you prefer surface travel from Dar, overland options (long‑distance bus or train) are much cheaper but far slower - see the Train & Bus card for details.
Train: Tabora is served by Tanzania Railways’ Central Line; trains run between Dar es Salaam (Dar es Salaam Central Railway Station) and Tabora (Tabora Railway Station) continuing on to Kigoma. Trains are slow and infrequent; expect an overnight or longer journey - roughly 20-36 hours from Dar depending on the service and schedule. Fares vary by class and service but are usually much cheaper than flying; book at the station or through official TRC outlets and allow for delays.
Bus: Long‑distance buses connect Tabora with Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mwanza and other regional towns. Journey times are long (often 18-30+ hours from Dar, depending on route and stops) and prices are typically in the tens of thousands of TZS (roughly 30,000-90,000 TZS one‑way depending on operator and comfort). Buses arrive at Tabora bus terminals near the town; for the final few kilometres use a local taxi, bajaj or boda‑boda.
How to Get Around Tabora
Tabora is best explored on short boda‑boda rides and on foot in the compact centre; dala‑dalas are the cheapest option for routine trips but can be crowded. For comfort or airport transfers use taxis or arrange a car hire; for intercity travel use the Central Line train or long‑distance buses if you prefer to avoid domestic flights.
- Dala‑dala (shared minibus) (500-1,000 TZS) - Dala‑dalas are the cheapest way to get around town and to nearby suburbs. Fares are very low (typically 500-1,000 TZS per short trip) but services are crowded, have fixed routes and can be slow; ask locals for the correct route number. Keep small change handy and be prepared to hop on/off at designated stops.
- Boda‑boda (motorcycle taxi) (1,000-3,000 TZS) - Motorbike taxis are everywhere and the quickest way to move around town, especially where roads are narrow. Typical short trips cost about 1,000-3,000 TZS; always agree the price before you ride and wear a helmet if possible. Use boda‑bodas for short hops rather than long interurban journeys for safety reasons.
- Bajaj (auto‑rickshaw) (1,500-4,000 TZS) - Three‑wheelers (bajaj) operate in Tabora for short to mid‑distance trips and are cheaper than taxis but more comfortable than a boda‑boda for small groups. Expect fares around 1,500-4,000 TZS depending on distance. Negotiate or confirm the meter/price before starting the trip.
- Taxi / Private car (5,000-15,000 TZS) - Metered taxis and private hire cars are available and useful for early/late travel or when you have luggage. Short in‑town journeys usually cost 5,000-15,000 TZS; airport transfers will be toward the higher end. Taxis are more comfortable but more expensive than local options - agree the fare upfront if there is no meter.
- Car hire (120,000-300,000 TZS) - Self‑drive or chauffeur hire is available from larger towns and some local agencies; daily rates vary widely depending on vehicle and driver but expect roughly 120,000-300,000 TZS per day for a basic hire with driver. A hired car gives you flexibility for day trips around Tabora Region (remote roads can be rough-choose a high‑clearance vehicle).
- Walking - The town centre is compact and walkable - many markets, shops and services are within easy walking distance. Walking is the best way to explore the central streets, but avoid poorly lit areas at night and keep valuables secure.
