Highveld (Mbabane - Malolotja)

April’s clearer skies begin to show after the main rains, and the Highveld is at one of its best moments for walking: Malolotja’s grasslands are green and rivers remain full. Warm daytime sun and cooler nights make for pleasant mountain camping, though some higher routes may still be sodden. This is a quieter tourist window compared with peak spring, so book small lodges in advance if you want a bush-to-mountain hike without crowds.

Middleveld (Manzini - Ezulwini Valley - Lobamba)

April brings a welcome reduction in rainfall and the Middleveld moves toward drier, cooler days; mornings are pleasantly warm and afternoons less oppressive than high-summer. The erection of outdoor markets and day trips to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary are pleasant before the cool season sets in, and birdwatching is particularly good. Pack a light jacket for evenings and an umbrella for the odd late storm that can still appear early in the month.

Lowveld (Big Bend - Nsoko - Mlawula areas)

April brings a dramatic transformation as rains taper and the Lowveld remains hot by day but less oppressive; the landscape is deep green and safari lodges are busy with good game-viewing. Rivers are still high, offering productive riverbank birding; roads gradually firm up, improving access to reserves. Pack lighter evening layers as nights become more comfortable and be mindful that malaria risk can persist into the shoulder season.

Lubombo Range & Eastern Escarpment (Hlane - Mlawula - Lubombo ridge)

April sees storms decline and the escarpment remains warm and very green; mornings are pleasantly cool for early game drives and bush walks, while afternoons stay warm with fewer showers. Trails in Mlawula open up and birding intensifies as water levels drop slowly, producing good sightings. Lightweight layers for mornings and insect protection at dusk are sensible packing choices.
