Suwa Ko

Suwa Ko (Lake Suwa) is a shallow lake in the Suwa Basin of Nagano Prefecture, Japan, with towns and shrine precincts around its shores. It is a central geographic and cultural feature of the local Suwa area.

The lake supports boating, fisheries and lakeside hot-spring towns and is associated with the four-part Suwa Taisha shrine complex on its shores. Winters occasionally produce a distinctive ice phenomenon known as Omiwatari, historically noted in local records and connected to shrine rites.

The lake serves local transport and tourism needs and is surrounded by urban and agricultural land in the Suwa Basin; local rail stations and roads provide access from other parts of Nagano Prefecture.

Geographically it sits in central Nagano with the city of Suwa and several onsen towns on its shores.

• Omiwatari: In winter, when the lake freezes strongly enough, an ice phenomenon called Omiwatari (visible ice ridges) has been recorded for centuries and is culturally significant to the local shrine.
