Suur-Pakri
Island Island in Estonia's Gulf of Finland, natural landscapes
Off Estonia’s Harju County coast, Suur-Pakri (Big Pakri) island features limestone cliffs, abandoned village ruins and seabird colonies. Day-trippers and birdwatchers arrive by boat for shoreline walks and coastal photography.
Suur-Pakri is the larger of the two Pakri islands off Estonia’s north coast in Harju County, located in the Gulf of Finland near the town of Paldiski.
The island is characterised by low coastal terrain, coastal meadows and shoreline features that attract seabirds and nature interest rather than dense tourism infrastructure. It was historically home to Swedish-speaking communities until evacuations in the mid-20th century and today is largely sparsely inhabited.
Suur-Pakri sits offshore west of Tallinn and is reached by boat from the Estonian mainland; the surrounding marine and coastal habitats are the island’s primary attractions.
- Island status: Largest of the Pakri islands lying off Estonia's north coast near the port town of Paldiski.
- Historical note: Historically inhabited by coastal Swedish-speaking communities until the mid-20th century; much of the island is now sparsely populated and valued for coastal habitats and birdlife.
