About Naissaar#
Naissaar is an island in the Gulf of Finland off Estonia’s northern coast, part of Harju County and within sight of Tallinn and the nearby mainland port of Paldiski. The island is low, forested and noted for sandy beaches, coastal fortifications and sparse settlement.
Historically the island served military purposes under Russian and Soviet control and still contains bunkers, coastal batteries and traces of military infrastructure. Since independence the island has been managed for conservation, recreation and heritage, with walking trails and preserved fortifications.
Today Naissaar is a mix of pine forest, dunes and shoreline with a few small villages and holiday cottages; it is visited primarily for day trips, nature walks and beach access in summer.
The island lies in the Gulf of Finland off Estonia’s northern shore, a short ferry ride from the mainland and within the administrative area of Harju County.
- Access: Access is by scheduled ferry services from the Estonian mainland and short private boat trips; visitor facilities are limited and seasonal.
How to Get to Naissaar#
Seasonal ferries connect Naissaar with Tallinn’s Old Harbour (Balti Jaama) and Leppneeme harbour in Viimsi. Travel time is typically 30-60 minutes depending on departure point and vessel. Check operator schedules in advance-winter services are very limited.
Tips for Visiting Naissaar#
- Check ferry schedules (seasonal) from Tallinn (Balti Jaama) or Leppneeme-services don't run hourly.
- Bring sturdy shoes for the old fort and WWII-era concrete emplacements; parts of the island are unexploded-ordnance cleared but still rugged.
- Look for the island's two lighthouses and the small museum in the former military quarters; the coastal pine scent is unexpectedly strong on sunny days.
Best Time to Visit Naissaar#
Summer is the clear choice-ferries run more often and the island's low, exposed landscape is most pleasant then.
