Archaeological Site Indus Valley archaeological site with Harappan-era remains
An Indus Valley archaeological site in Gujarat, Surkotada draws archaeologists and curious travelers to its Harappan-era fortifications and excavated settlement remains, offering direct insight into Bronze Age urban planning around Kutch.
Surkotada is an archaeological site in Gujarat, India, identified with the Indus Valley (Harappan) civilization and occupied in the 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. It is a fortified settlement notable in Harappan studies.
Excavations revealed a citadel, a lower town and domestic structures made of mud-brick, together with wells and streets. Finds include pottery, beads and animal bone assemblages that help date the site to the mature Harappan phase.
Research at Surkotada was carried out by Indian archaeological teams in the 20th century and contributed to understanding regional variations within the Indus system. The reported equid remains from the site have been a particular focus in discussions about early horse presence in South Asia.
The site is located inland in the Kutch/Gujarat region of western India, on relatively flat semi-arid terrain where many Harappan sites are found.
- Equid remains: Some excavators reported horse or equid remains at the site, which has been discussed in debates about early domestic horses in South Asia.
- Planned layout: The site demonstrates a planned layout with streets, wells and fortified walls typical of Harappan-period settlements in Gujarat.
What to See #
- Citadel and lower town: Excavations uncovered a fortified citadel and a lower town with mud-brick architecture consistent with mature Harappan urban planning.
- Cemeteries and occupation deposits: Burial areas and refuse pits were excavated outside the settlement perimeter, providing pottery, bone and other material culture dated to the 3rd-2nd millennium BCE.
