Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area

Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area preserves the remains of a large gold dredge and the surrounding mining landscape in northeastern Oregon. The site interprets early 20th century industrial placer mining in the Sumpter area.

The central feature is a massive bucket-line or multi-bucket dredge and the adjacent piles of tailings and ponds created by dredging operations. The area includes interpretive material for visitors interested in mining technology and local history.

The dredge and associated equipment were used during the region’s gold mining boom in the early 1900s and later retired as mining declined; the site has been preserved to interpret that industrial period. Preservation efforts focus on the dredge hull, mechanical remains, and the altered landscape left by dredging.

Located near the town of Sumpter in Baker County, the heritage area sits in forested highlands of northeastern Oregon and is accessible by local roads serving the Sumpter Valley region.
