Sumida Park
Park Riverside park famed for cherry blossoms and views
Along the Sumida River in Tokyo, Sumida Park is known for cherry-blossom viewing, riverside walks and sightlines to Tokyo Skytree; crowds gather there during hanami season.
Sumida Park is a linear riverside park alongside the Sumida River in Tokyo, stretching between the Asakusa area and the riverfront beneath Tokyo Skytree. It is well known for its extensive cherry-tree plantings and for offering direct views of the river and nearby historic Asakusa.
Hundreds of cherry trees line the riverside paths and attract large crowds for hanami during the late March to early April season. The park is also a focal point for the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in summer and provides riverside promenades, benches and bridges for photography and river views.
The park was developed to provide green space along the river and to link cultural sites in the Asakusa and Sumida wards; it is managed as public urban parkland with paths on both riverbanks and several pedestrian bridges. Seasonal planting and maintenance keep it a prominent public venue for festivals and recreation.
Sumida Park lies in the Taito and Sumida wards of Tokyo, adjacent to the Asakusa temple district on the southern side of the river and immediately below Tokyo Skytree on the northern bank, within easy walking distance of Asakusa Station and Skytree Station.
- Length: The park runs roughly for about 1 kilometre along the Sumida River between the Azuma Bridge and the Sakurabashi/Azumabashi area, making it a concentrated riverside green space in central Tokyo.
- Seasonal highlights: Best known for its spring cherry blossoms, the park is a major hanami spot from late March into early April, and it is one of the viewing locations for the Sumida River Fireworks held in late July.
What to See #
- Asakusa stretch: The Asakusa stretch runs along the river bank near Asakusa and Senso-ji, providing close views of the temple district and a popular hanami area in spring.
- Skytree-side promenade: The area near Tokyo Skytree on the park's northern bank provides elevated views of the tower and the riverscape and links the park to the Sumida riverfront promenades north of the river.
How to Get to Sumida Park #
From Asakusa Station (Ginza/Asakusa lines), walk east along the Sumida River for 5-10 minutes to reach the central stretch. Oshiage (Skytree) Station is a 10-15 minute walk from the northern end; many visitors walk the river between the two stations.
Tips for Visiting Sumida Park #
- Go at first light during late March-early April to see the cherry trees before tour groups arrive and to catch clean reflections of the SkyTree on the Sumida River.
- Walk the riverbank north from Asakusa toward Oshiage - the views change with each bridge; stop at the small riverside cafés rather than the busier temple precincts.
- Board a short Sumida River cruise (Asakusa-Hama-rikyū or Asakusa-Odaiba) for a different angle on the park and Tokyo's layered skyline.
Best Time to Visit Sumida Park #
Best visited in spring for cherry blossom season; otherwise mornings or evenings avoid the crowds.
