Sultartangalón is a reservoir in the Southern Region of Iceland created as part of the country’s hydroelectric infrastructure. It stores glacially fed water in a highland-influenced landscape.
The reservoir is framed by volcanic and glacial terrain typical of southern Iceland and is associated with dams and power-station intake works rather than urban recreation facilities. The area around the reservoir offers views of nearby highland roads and rugged countryside.
The impoundment was formed by damming local watercourses to supply hydroelectric schemes that were developed in the 20th century. Its primary role is water storage and regulation for power generation.
Geographically it lies inland in southern Iceland in a sparsely populated area of volcanic and glacial features; access is by rural roads that cross the region.
