Sukuh is a 15th-century Javanese-Hindu temple complex on the slopes of Mount Lawu in Central Java. The site is distinctive for its truncated-pyramid main shrine and unusually explicit relief sculpture produced during the late Majapahit period.

The principal feature is a stepped, pyramidal main shrine approached by a steep stone stair and set within a series of terraced courts. Stone reliefs and sculptures at the site include ritual motifs, lingam-yoni symbolism and figurative carvings that differ stylistically from earlier Central Javanese temples.

The compact complex is compact and easy to walk; its architecture and iconography attract visitors interested in late-Hindu Javanese art and the transition toward localized religious forms in the 15th century.

Constructed during the decline of the Majapahit polity in the 15th century, Sukuh represents a regional form of Hindu temple architecture with strong local and ritual emphases. Scholars date the site to the late Majapahit era based on stylistic and epigraphic evidence.

Located in Karanganyar Regency on the western slopes of Mount Lawu near Surakarta (Solo) in Central Java, the temple sits at higher elevation than the surrounding plains and is accessed by mountain roads from the nearby towns.

• Dating and style: The temple dates to the late Majapahit period (15th century) and is noted for its unusual, almost proto-pyramidal form that differs from typical Central Javanese candis.
• Access and approach: The site is on the slopes of Mount Lawu and is commonly visited together with nearby hilltop temples such as Cetho; expect a mountain-road approach and a short walk down to the complex.

• Main pyramid (principal shrine): A stepped, truncated-pyramid main shrine that departs from classical Javanese temple tiers and resembles a Mesoamerican-style pyramid in its massing, with a narrow entrance stair and terraced platform.
• Terraces and relief panels: Terraced courts and carved relief panels showing scenes and ritual imagery, including clear lingam-yoni symbolism and life-size carved figures dating to the site’s construction period.

From solo or Surakarta (Solo), drive east toward Karanganyar and follow signs to Ngargoyoso and Candi Sukuh (approx. 40-60 km depending on start). Local minibuses (angkot) and private drivers can be hired from Solo; from Tawangmangu the temple is a short drive uphill.

• Visit early morning to avoid heat and to catch the carved reliefs in sharp sidelight.
• Wear shoes with good grip-stone terraces and steps can be slippery after rain.
• Look for the unusual phallic reliefs and funnel‑shaped lingga motifs that set Sukuh apart from other Javanese temples.
