Sukuh

Sukuh is a 15th-century Javanese-Hindu temple complex on the slopes of Mount Lawu in Central Java. The site is distinctive for its truncated-pyramid main shrine and unusually explicit relief sculpture produced during the late Majapahit period.

The principal feature is a stepped, pyramidal main shrine approached by a steep stone stair and set within a series of terraced courts. Stone reliefs and sculptures at the site include ritual motifs, lingam-yoni symbolism and figurative carvings that differ stylistically from earlier Central Javanese temples.

The compact complex is compact and easy to walk; its architecture and iconography attract visitors interested in late-Hindu Javanese art and the transition toward localized religious forms in the 15th century.

Constructed during the decline of the Majapahit polity in the 15th century, Sukuh represents a regional form of Hindu temple architecture with strong local and ritual emphases. Scholars date the site to the late Majapahit era based on stylistic and epigraphic evidence.

Located in Karanganyar Regency on the western slopes of Mount Lawu near Surakarta (Solo) in Central Java, the temple sits at higher elevation than the surrounding plains and is accessed by mountain roads from the nearby towns.
