Sükhbaatar Square

Sükhbaatar Square is the central public square of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, named for the revolutionary leader Damdin Sükhbaatar. It functions as the symbolic and administrative heart of the city.

A prominent equestrian statue of Sükhbaatar stands on the square and a row of government buildings, including the Government Palace, faces the open plaza. The square is frequently used for official ceremonies, public gatherings and national celebrations.

The site has been the centre of civic life since the 20th century and has been redesigned and renamed at various times as Mongolia’s political landscape changed. It remains the main gathering place for state events and major public demonstrations.

The square sits in the core of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by major streets and cultural institutions, and is within walking distance of museums and other central city landmarks.

• Naadam and public events: The square is the site of national ceremonies and military parades, especially during the Naadam festival held each July, when large public gatherings are staged here.
