Sudirman Range
Mountains High mountain range in Indonesian Papua with glaciers
A highland range in western New Guinea that includes Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid). Climbers and expedition teams come for technical mountaineering, glaciated peaks and remote jungle approaches.
The Sudirman Range is a mountain chain in the central highlands of Papua (Central Papua), Indonesia, forming part of New Guinea’s central cordillera. It contains some of the island’s highest peaks and steep alpine terrain.
Among the range’s principal features is Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), which rises to 4,884 metres and is the highest point in Indonesia. The range also contains significant mineral deposits and the large Grasberg mining complex, which occupies high valleys on the southern slopes.
The mountains were formed by the active tectonics of the New Guinea highlands and host rugged, often glaciated peaks at the highest elevations. The combination of extreme altitude, steep terrain and equatorial location creates rare alpine and glacial environments.
Geographically the Sudirman Range runs through the central part of Papua province; access for expeditions and mining operations is generally from the southern lowlands around Timika and from limited airstrips and jungle tracks into the highlands.
- Highest peak: Puncak Jaya, at 4,884 metres, is the highest mountain in Indonesia and on the island of New Guinea, attracting technical mountaineering expeditions.
What to See #
- Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid): Rises to Indonesia's highest island peak, Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), at 4,884 metres and is the objective for technical climbers seeking one of the Seven Summits.
- Grasberg mine: Contains the Grasberg mining complex, a large porphyry copper-gold mine located in high-altitude valleys on the southern slopes of the range.
Tips for Visiting Sudirman Range #
- If you're aiming for Puncak Jaya or high-altitude visits, plan for the dry season (roughly April-October) and arrange permits, logistics and experienced local guides well in advance-this is remote, technical terrain.
- Most access begins from Timika; confirm transport (flights, helicopter or overland arrangements) and secure all regional permits and local approvals before travel.
- Be aware that reaching the higher parts of the Sudirman Range requires specialist climbing skills and equipment-only attempt with a reputable expedition operator.
Best Time to Visit Sudirman Range #
Best visited during the dry season (May-October) when rain is reduced and access across the range is easier.
