Su Nuraxi (Barumini) Archaeological Site

Su Nuraxi of Barumini is a Bronze Age Nuragic complex on Sardinia and one of the best‑preserved examples of the island’s prehistoric tower structures. The site is recognized for its scale and state of preservation and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The monument’s core is a central multi‑storey nuraghe surrounded by a ring of smaller towers and a wider village of stone huts and alleys, giving a clear picture of settlement and defensive architecture. Walkways and interpretive signage allow visitors to follow the layout of the central fortress and the adjacent domestic areas.

Constructed in the second millennium BCE during the Nuragic culture, the complex underwent phases of building and enlargement reflecting social and defensive needs across centuries. Major archaeological excavations and restorations in the 20th century clarified the site’s plan and reinforced standing structures for public viewing.

Set near the modern town of Barumini in central‑southern Sardinia, the site sits on low hills in a rural landscape and is reachable from Cagliari and other Sardinian towns by road.

• Central nuraghe: The central multi‑tower nuraghe with its massive central tower and surrounding smaller towers that form the defensive core of the complex.
• Surrounding village: An extended village area of huts, paths and secondary towers that surrounds the main structure and illustrates domestic life in the Nuragic period.

Su Nuraxi is beside the village of Barumini in central Sardinia. By car from Cagliari it is roughly 55-60 km (about an hour) via the main northbound SS131 highway; follow local signs to Barumini and the archaeological site. There is a visitor parking area and the excavated complex and museum are a short walk (around 5-15 minutes) from the parking/visitor centre.

• Book a guided tour through the visitor center and aim for an early morning slot to avoid midday heat and larger tour groups - guided visits are the main way to access the nuraghe's interior areas.
• Don't skip the small museum at the visitor center and its introductory film: many visitors head straight to the stone towers and miss important archaeological context.
• Arrive via the official parking area at the visitor center; access routes within the archaeological park are controlled and opening times are seasonal, so check ahead.
