Střekov Castle is a 14th-century hilltop castle ruin overlooking the Elbe River in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. Perched on a steep basalt outcrop, it was built to control and guard an important river passage.
Visitors encounter ruined towers, ramparts and terraces with direct views downriver; the site is frequently photographed for its dramatic riverside setting. The castle’s silhouette has been a notable landmark on the Elbe since medieval times.
Originally constructed in the 1300s to secure trade and transport along the Elbe, the castle later changed hands several times and gradually fell into disuse and ruin. Its strategic location meant it figured in regional conflicts and trade control during the medieval and early modern periods.
The castle stands above the left bank of the Elbe near the town of Ústí nad Labem, within easy driving distance of the regional road network and river ports along the Elbe corridor.
