Stonecutters Island
Island Island in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, industrial history
Former island in Victoria Harbour now connected by reclamation; known for container terminals and industrial waterfront views, accessed from Sham Shui Po and nearby promenades.
Stonecutters Island is an island in Hong Kong’s harbour area, listed under Sham Shui Po District in many administrative references. One notable modern structure associated with the island is the large cable-stayed road bridge that crosses the Rambler Channel.
The most prominent feature in the immediate area is the Stonecutters Bridge, which has a main span of 1,018 metres and opened in 2009; the bridge provides a major road link between Kowloon/Tsuen Wan and Tsing Yi. The island sits within the busy industrial and port landscape of western Victoria Harbour and is adjacent to container terminal and shipping channels.
Historically the island has been used for government and operational facilities; 20th and 21st century infrastructure and land reclamation projects have significantly altered its shoreline and connections to neighbouring areas. Its role shifted from isolated island uses to being integrated into Hong Kong’s transport and port infrastructure.
Geographically it lies in the Rambler Channel area, north of the main Kowloon Peninsula and east of Tsing Yi Island, within the inner harbour of Hong Kong and close to major container terminal facilities.
- Bridge span: The bridge's main span measures 1,018 metres, making it one of the longest cable-stayed spans in the world.
- Location note: Located within Hong Kong's urban harbour area and administratively associated with the Sham Shui Po District.
