Stone Town of Zanzibar
Historical Site Historic Swahili trading town with narrow alleys, forts
Stone Town’s narrow alleys, carved wooden doors and Swahili merchant houses reflect centuries of Indian Ocean trade. Tourists explore bazaars, the old fort, palace museums and the Forodhani seafront market.
Stone Town is the historic core of Zanzibar City on Unguja island and the island’s principal seaport. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its fusion of African, Arab and European influences and its historic urban fabric.
The old town is known for its labyrinth of narrow streets, tightly packed coral-stone buildings and ornate carved wooden doors. Key visitor highlights include a compact set of monuments and public spaces such as the waterfront market, museums built into former houses, and night-time food stalls along the seafront.
Major landmarks inside the town include the House of Wonders, the nearby Old Fort and the waterfront gardens and market, all reachable on foot within the historic quarter. Many streets are pedestrian-only and the town is small enough to explore in a day with stops at museums and craft shops.
Stone Town developed as a Swahili port and later expanded under Omani Arab rule in the 19th century, becoming a center for trade in cloves and other goods. The town’s fabric reflects centuries of coastal trade and the administrative shift when Zanzibar became the Sultanate’s seat.
The old town sits on the west coast of Unguja island facing the Zanzibar Channel, within Zanzibar City. The compact historic district occupies the original harbourfront and immediately inland streets and lanes.
- Best time to visit: Evenings at the waterfront food market are busiest and best for tasting local seafood and street dishes.
- Photography tip: Many 19th-century carved wooden doors and narrow lanes are concentrated in the old town and make good subjects for close-up photography.
What to See #
- House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib): Built as a ceremonial and commercial building during the late 19th century, completed in 1883 and noted for its height and timber verandas; it was one of the first buildings in the town to have an elevator.
- Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe): A coastal fortification built by Omani authorities that later housed a market and cultural events; the fort precinct contains small galleries and overlooks the main harbor.
- Forodhani Gardens: A narrow foreshore park where food stalls and evening hawkers gather at dusk; popular for grilled seafood and views across the harbour toward the mangroves and sea.
