How to Get to Stepantsminda#
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is reached from Tbilisi - fly into Tbilisi International Airport, then take a marshrutka from Didube bus station or arrange a private transfer. The mountain road (Georgian Military Road) offers scenic views en route.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): Tbilisi is the main international gateway for Georgia. From Tbilisi Airport take a taxi to Didube bus station (about 25-40 minutes depending on traffic) or use the airport taxi services; taxis cost modestly (typical fares vary, allow for local fares) and are the usual way to reach city bus/minibus hubs.
Kutaisi (KUT): Kutaisi handles some low-cost international flights; if arriving in Kutaisi you will need a long road transfer to Tbilisi (bus or train) before continuing to Stepantsminda.
Train: There is no direct regular train service to Stepantsminda; rail travel in Georgia is focused on Tbilisi-western routes and not convenient for the Kazbegi region.
Bus / Marshrutka: The usual public route is a marshrutka (minibus) from Tbilisi Didube bus station to Stepantsminda (sometimes called Kazbegi). Marshrutkas depart several times daily, take about 3 hours and are an affordable option (fares are modest, often under 15 GEL). Private transfers and taxis from Tbilisi are common and faster if you prefer a direct door-to-door service.

- Private transfer / Taxi (GEL 80-200+) - Private cars or taxis from Tbilisi are faster and more comfortable for groups or if you have luggage; drivers will often stop for viewpoints. Prices are higher than marshrutkas but offer door-to-door convenience.
- Guided tours (Variable) - Many visitors join day tours from Tbilisi that include transport and a guide - convenient for short visits and for seeing sights like Gergeti Trinity Church with minimal planning.
- Car rental (GEL 80-200/day) - Renting a car allows you to drive the Georgian Military Road at your own pace; mountain driving requires caution and awareness of weather. Fuel and insurance rules should be checked with rental companies.
