How to Get to Gudauri#
Gudauri is an alpine ski town on the Georgian Military Road, easiest reached by road from Tbilisi International Airport (TBS). Most visitors fly into Tbilisi then take a shuttle, marshrutka or private taxi northbound to Gudauri.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): Tbilisi is the main international gateway for visitors to Gudauri. From TBS you can reach Gudauri by road: private car or taxi takes about 2-2.5 hours (roughly 120-140 km) and typically costs 120-200 GEL for a private transfer. Some shared transfers are cheaper (about 15-25 GEL per person) when available.
Kutaisi International Airport (KUT): Kutaisi is farther away (approx. 220-260 km) and not recommended for same‑day transfers to Gudauri unless you plan a long drive; travel times are 4-5+ hours by car.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Gudauri; rail travel can get you to Tbilisi, then onward by road.
Bus / Marshrutka: Marshrutkas and minibuses leave from Tbilisi (Didube Terminal) to Kazbegi and some to Gudauri in winter/ski season. Expect 2-3 hour journeys from Tbilisi depending on traffic and stops. Prices for marshrutkas are commonly around 10-25 GEL per person; seasonal private shuttles to ski resorts run at higher fares.
How to Get Around Gudauri#
The best way to reach Gudauri is by road from Tbilisi (private transfer or marshrutka). On‑site, private transfers and local minibuses handle most longer trips while walking covers the resort centre.
- Private transfers / taxis (120-200 GEL (private)) - Private taxis or booked transfers from Tbilisi to Gudauri are the most comfortable and reliable option, especially with luggage or ski equipment. Journey time is roughly 2-2.5 hours; agree a fixed fare in advance or book via a reputable operator.
- Marshrutka (minibus) (10-25 GEL) - Shared minibuses run from Tbilisi’s Didube station to Gudauri or to nearby towns; they are cheaper but less comfortable and can leave only when full. Expect about 2-3 hours travel; carry cash and luggage limits may apply.
- Car rental (From ~80-200 GEL/day depending on vehicle) - Renting a car gives freedom to stop along the Georgian Military Road (Ananuri, Jvari, etc.). Roads are generally good but winter driving into the mountains requires winter tyres and caution for snow/ice.
- Ski resort shuttles (seasonal) (15-40 GEL (shared shuttle)) - During winter many hotels and operators run scheduled resort shuttles between Tbilisi and Gudauri; they are convenient and often timed to flights. Book in advance in high season.
- Local taxis and minibuses (5-30 GEL) - Once in Gudauri, short local taxis and minibuses serve nearby slopes and villages. Costs are modest for short rides but can rise quickly for longer mountain journeys-confirm fares up front.
- Walking - Gudauri village and many ski lift bases are compact and easily explored on foot; walking is practical between accommodation, restaurants and lift stations in good weather.
