St. Olaf’s Church (Oleviste kirik) is a medieval parish church in Tallinn’s Old Town, Estonia, with origins in the 12th century. Its tall spire is the building’s most notable feature and has been a landmark on the Tallinn skyline for centuries.

The most prominent feature is the church tower, which reaches about 124 metres and provides panoramic views over Tallinn’s medieval streets and harbour. The tower’s historic spire was long claimed to have been the tallest in the world during the 16th and early 17th centuries.

Inside, the church contains a mix of medieval Gothic stonework and later interior fittings, including several historic altarpieces and memorials. The compact Old Town setting places the building within easy walking distance of the Town Hall Square and other heritage sites.

A church has stood on this site since the 12th century; the present stone building developed through medieval Gothic rebuilding in the 14th and 15th centuries and later repairs after fires and lightning strikes. Over time the tower was rebuilt and modified several times, producing the tall spire that dominates the skyline today.

Located in Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town in Harju County, the church sits a short walk from the Town Hall Square and the harbour, at the heart of the historic city core.

  • Tower height: 123.7 metres is the commonly given height for the tower; the spire was historically claimed to be the world's tallest in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Visitor access: The tower is open to the public at times of year - check local opening hours and climb restrictions before visiting.
