St. Marx Cemetery
Park 19th-century Viennese cemetery site with notable graves
Cemetery in Vienna associated with 18th‑century burials and a memorial for Mozart; visitors explore its Baroque-era graves and the park‑like layout.
St. Marx Cemetery (Sankt Marxer Friedhof) is a historic cemetery in Vienna’s Landstraße district established in the late 18th century. It is best known for being the burial place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was interred there in 1791.
Opened in the late 1700s during a period of urban sanitary reform, the cemetery was used through the 19th century and later fell into neglect before conservation efforts began. Mozart was buried there in December 1791 in a common grave, which was customary for the period.
The cemetery lies in Vienna’s Landstraße district to the southeast of the inner city, within the city’s built-up area and accessible from central Vienna.
- Period and character: Opened in the late 18th century and now preserved as a historic cemetery and park, it contains headstones and monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries.
What to See #
- Mozart memorial: A memorial and marker indicate the approximate location of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's burial within the cemetery, despite his original grave being unmarked due to common grave practices of the time.
How to Get to St. Marx Cemetery #
The old cemetery is outside the Innere Stadt; from central Vienna take the U2 subway toward Donaustadt and change to local transit or take a tram/bus service toward the Simmering/Seestadt districts. Expect a 20-30 minute transit ride from the city center.
Tips for Visiting St. Marx Cemetery #
- St. Marx is a cemetery more of whispers than rituals: look for the modest markers and the explanatory panels that discuss Mozart's burial.
- Bring a guidebook or audio guide - the site is diffuse and the most evocative stories come from their context rather than dramatic monuments.
- Combine a visit with a walk in the surrounding district to see how Vienna layered memorials and municipal planning over time.
Best Time to Visit St. Marx Cemetery #
Avoid high summer if the city's other attractions keep you on a tight schedule; mornings are quieter.
