St. Martin’s Cathedral (Domkerk) is the medieval cathedral of Utrecht, the Netherlands, whose construction began in the 13th century and which includes the Netherlands’ tallest church tower.

The site is dominated by the Dom Tower, at 112.5 metres, and visitors come for the tower’s views and for the cathedral’s Gothic choir and chapels. The cathedral complex also includes the Domplein, the historic square surrounding the church.

Construction took place across the medieval period; the building was a major ecclesiastical centre. A violent storm in 1674 caused the nave to collapse, leaving the tower physically separated from the remaining choir and transept.

The cathedral stands at Domplein in the heart of Utrecht city centre, adjacent to the university precinct and about 30 km southeast of Amsterdam.

St. Martin’s Cathedral (Domkerk) is in Utrecht’s city centre at Domplein. From Utrecht Centraal railway station it is about a 10-15 minute walk (roughly 800-1,200 m) following signs toward the city centre and Domplein/Domstraat.

By car Utrecht is roughly 45 km from Amsterdam via the A2 motorway; once in Utrecht follow signs for Centrum/Domplein and use one of the central parking garages before walking to the cathedral.

• Aim for early morning or a weekday visit to the Domplein to avoid midday tour groups; the cathedral interior and adjacent Domtoren tours are far quieter outside peak times.
• Buy a combined ticket or reserve a spot for the Domtoren climb in advance - the guided tower climbs run on set schedules and often fill up in summer.
