St. Florian’s Gate is a surviving Gothic city gate in Kraków that formed part of the medieval defensive walls. The tower dates to the 14th century and presents a tall, brick-built facade marking the northern entrance to the Old Town.

The structure functions as the start of the historic Royal Route, with Floriańska Street extending south from the gate to the Main Market Square. The gate’s height and position make it a dominant landmark on the approach to the Old Town.

Built in the 1300s as part of the city’s fortifications, the tower and gate have survived periods of modification and restoration and remain one of the best-preserved elements of Kraków’s medieval defences. Adjacent defensive works, including the nearby Barbican, were part of the same defensive system.

Located at the northern edge of Kraków’s Old Town, the gate sits where the medieval city wall once enclosed the centre and is a short walk from the Main Market Square in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

• Best view: Look along the north-south Royal Route for the classic view with Floriańska Street leading from the gate toward the Main Market Square.
• Context: The gate is part of Kraków’s surviving medieval fortifications and sits near the Barbican, a continental example of a city gate complex.

St. Florian’s Gate sits at the northern end of Kraków’s Old Town. Walkable from Planty Park; nearest tram stops include Muzeum Narodowe or Teatr Słowackiego. If arriving by train, it’s a 20-25 minute walk from Kraków Główny (main station).

• Visit early morning before tour groups arrive to walk the Royal Route (Droga Królewska) in peace.
• Look for the iron rings on the outer wall - they were used to tether horses during the gate's heyday.
• Climb the small stair inside the gate for a rare, close-up view of the medieval machicolations and brickwork.
