Key features around the square include the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), St. Mary’s Basilica with its hourly trumpet call, and the Town Hall Tower; the square hosts markets, open-air cafes and public events, and is a focal point for visitors exploring the Old Town.

The square was established in the 13th century following the city’s medieval reorganisation and has remained the commercial and social heart of Kraków since that time.

Located in the centre of Kraków’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, the square connects to major streets such as Floriańska and is a short walk from Wawel Hill and other central attractions.

• St. Mary’s Basilica: St. Mary’s Basilica dominates one corner of the square and is famous for its hourly trumpet call, the Hejnał, played from the taller tower.
• Cloth Hall (Sukiennice): The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) is a long Renaissance arcade at the centre of the square historically used for trade and now housing shops and a second-floor museum gallery.
• Town Hall Tower: The Town Hall Tower is a surviving Gothic tower from the old town hall complex that offers a view over the square from its upper levels.

Kraków’s Main Square (Rynek Główny) is the city centre. It is within a 5-15 minute walk of Kraków Główny railway station and is served by many central tram stops (e.g. the theatre/Old Town stops). If you are already in Kraków’s centre you will arrive on foot; from the main station it is an easy straight walk into the square.

• Go at first light to enjoy the Main Square with far fewer people and the best conditions for photos of the Cloth Hall and surrounding architecture.
• If you plan museum visits, book timed entry for the Rynek Underground or Sukiennice Gallery and visit them during quieter mid-morning slots rather than peak lunchtime.
• Approach the square from Grodzka or Kanonicza streets to avoid the busiest flows from the train/bus stations and get a more relaxed initial view of the market area.
