St Augustine's Abbey
Religious Site Ruined Benedictine abbey and UNESCO World Heritage site
Ruined Benedictine abbey in Canterbury, part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble with the cathedral. Tourists explore cloister remnants, archaeological displays and the abbey’s role in England’s early medieval religious history.
St Augustine’s Abbey is a medieval monastic site in Canterbury, England, founded in the late 6th century as part of the early Christian mission to the Anglo-Saxons. The abbey became one of the most important religious houses in medieval England and served as a burial place for archbishops.
Today the site is largely ruins but includes substantial archaeological remains of the abbey church, cloisters and monastic buildings that reveal multiple building phases from the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods. Interpretation panels and an on-site display provide context for the excavated structures and finds.
The abbey was dissolved in the 16th century during the English Reformation and many of its buildings were dismantled. Archaeological investigation since the 19th century has documented its layout and history.
It sits immediately west of Canterbury Cathedral in the city center, forming part of the cathedral precinct and the wider UNESCO World Heritage Site for Canterbury’s religious complex.
- Foundation date: Founded in 597 AD as part of the mission of Augustine of Canterbury, it was a principal Benedictine monastery and burial site for early archbishops.
- World Heritage status: Together with Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin's Church it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site representing the development of English Christianity.

Tips for Visiting St Augustine's Abbey #
- Go during weekday mornings outside school holidays when coach groups are smallest and the abbey ruins are quieter for exploring the archaeological layout and cloister remnants.
- Approach the abbey on foot from Canterbury city centre (the route across the River Stour) to combine a short riverside walk with the visit rather than arriving with coach crowds at the main car park.
- Many visitors concentrate on Canterbury Cathedral and miss the interpretive displays and buried-ruin outlines at St Augustine's Abbey that explain Canterbury's early medieval monastic life-allow time for the site panels and small exhibitions.
- If you plan to visit multiple historic sites in Canterbury, check combined-ticket options and stagger entry times so you avoid peak-group overlaps at the abbey and cathedral.
