Isle of Thanet Area

The Isle of Thanet is a peninsula on the northeast coast of Kent, England, historically treated as an island because the Wantsum Channel once separated it from the mainland. Today it contains several coastal towns and holiday resorts.

The area includes multiple seaside towns such as Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs, offering sandy beaches, promenades and maritime heritage. Visitors come for beach recreation, coastal walks and historic harbour areas.

In the early medieval period the Wantsum Channel made Thanet an island; over centuries the channel silted and the land connection was re-established. From the 18th and 19th centuries the coastal towns developed as seaside resorts.

Thanet sits on Kent’s northeastern tip facing the North Sea, forming the county’s easternmost coastal district and connected to the Kent mainland.

• Historical island status: Historically separated from mainland Kent by the Wantsum Channel, the area became connected to the rest of Kent after the channel silted up in the medieval period.

• Broadstairs: Broadstairs is a smaller coastal town known for sheltered bays and a traditional seaside character, popular for day trips and beaches.

Thanet is served by rail lines to Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs from London St Pancras/Charing Cross (via High Speed or Southeastern services). Road access is via the A299 (Thanet Way) from the M2/A2.

• Use local bus services from Ramsgate, Margate or Broadstairs to reach different Thanet towns; the Isle isn't an island administratively but a historic peninsula with good rail links.
• Walk the Viking coastal paths and time visits for low tide to explore hidden beaches and rock pools.
• Visit during the chalk gull migrations in autumn for notable birdwatching moments.
