The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of roughly 84 islands and islets in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria, belonging to Uganda’s Kalangala District. The group is noted for its sandy beaches, inland forests and fishing communities concentrated on the larger islands.

Popular activities across the islands include beach recreation, sport fishing and informal wildlife watching; the islands are principally visited for relaxation and local village life rather than formal tourist infrastructure. Bugala is the largest island and contains the main settlements and transport connections used by most visitors.

The islands have long been inhabited and are administered as Kalangala District; local economies rely on fishing, small-scale agriculture and growing tourism. Over recent decades some islands have seen development of lodges and guesthouses aimed at short-stay visitors.

Geographically the archipelago lies in Lake Victoria, southwest of mainland Uganda and southwest of the capital, Kampala; the islands are reached by ferry from mainland ports or by scheduled flights to Bugala Island.
