Sriharikota
Island Indian spaceport island hosting ISRO launch complexes
On a barrier island off Andhra Pradesh, Sriharikota hosts the Satish Dhawan Space Centre; visitors and enthusiasts travel for rocket launches and to observe India’s satellite and orbital launch activity from designated viewing areas.
Sriharikota is a barrier island off the east coast of Andhra Pradesh, India, that hosts the country’s principal orbital launch facilities. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the island is the main operational complex used by the Indian Space Research Organisation for satellite launches.
The island’s launch pads and associated integration and control facilities support Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle missions, and the location gives a clear downrange corridor over the Bay of Bengal. The site has been developed and expanded since the late 20th century to handle India’s growing launch manifest.
Sriharikota lies north of Chennai and is accessed by road; its coastal position between Pulicat Lake and the sea is a key factor in its selection as a launch site.
- Coastal location advantage: Located on a barrier island between Pulicat Lake and the Bay of Bengal, the complex is positioned to provide safe downrange trajectories over open water for orbital launches.
- Primary national launch site: The site is the main operational launch facility for the Indian Space Research Organisation, supporting PSLV and GSLV family launches among others.
What to See #
- Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC): Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) - the island's primary launch complex, containing multiple launch pads, vehicle integration facilities and the mission control and range infrastructure used by ISRO.
- Launch pads and facilities: Launch pads and test facilities - hardened pads and support infrastructure that serve Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle missions and related operations.
How to Get to Sriharikota #
Sriharikota (Satish Dhawan Space Centre) is reached from the nearest railhead at Sullurpeta (Andhra Pradesh) - from Sullurpeta you must take a local taxi or bus onto the island/peninsula to reach the launch range (road transfer typically takes under an hour). By road Sriharikota lies on the coastal route north of Chennai; the drive from Chennai follows the NH16 corridor and is on the order of tens of kilometres (private car or taxi commonly used). Note: access to the launch complex itself is restricted and usually requires prior permission.
Tips for Visiting Sriharikota #
- Check ISRO's official launch schedule and local district announcements before planning a trip-access to the Sriharikota launch complex is restricted and public viewing requires planning around announced launch windows.
- If you don't have official passes, head to nearby Sullurpeta or Pulicat Lake shoreline viewpoints where locals and tour operators commonly set up public viewing spots; expect road closures and heavier local traffic on launch days.
- Allow several hours for travel from Chennai (or Tirupati) and prearrange transport-last‑mile options are limited and taxis/charters fill quickly on launch days.
Best Time to Visit Sriharikota #
If timing a visit around a launch or for clearer weather, favor the drier months (roughly October-March); the island experiences a pronounced monsoon in summer.
