St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica (commonly called San Thome Basilica) is a Roman Catholic basilica in the Santhome neighbourhood of Chennai, India, built over the traditional tomb of the Apostle Thomas. The first church on the site was established by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and the present Gothic-revival structure dates from the late 19th century.
The interior is dominated by the main altar and the tomb-chamber beneath it, and the church attracts both pilgrims and visitors interested in Christian history in India. Architectural highlights include Gothic-revival detailing, stained glass and a cruciform plan typical of 19th-century colonial churches.
Portuguese builders established the original shrine in the early 1500s to mark the reputed burial site of St. Thomas; the building on the present footprint was substantially rebuilt by colonial-era authorities in the late 19th century and has since served as the principal church for the local Catholic archdiocese.
