Spice Bazaar
Market Historic covered market selling spices and local goods
Eminönü’s Spice Bazaar concentrates herbs, teas, dried fruits, lokum and spice sellers under a domed market; shoppers sample and buy ingredients for Turkish cooking and confections.
Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) is an Ottoman-era covered market in the Eminönü district of Istanbul that dates to the 17th century and was built as part of the endowment of the Yeni Mosque. It is one of the city’s historic covered bazaars focused on spices, sweets and foodstuffs.
The market contains dozens of small shops and stalls selling spices, dried goods, Turkish delight, teas and packaged food items; many vendors have traded in the same aisles for generations. It is frequented by both residents sourcing culinary ingredients and tourists seeking specialty foods and gifts.
The bazaar was established as a vakıf (charitable endowment) market serving the mosque complex and the waterfront commercial quarter. Its covered arcade and vaulted aisles retain much of the traditional market layout.
The Spice Bazaar sits in Eminönü next to the Yeni Mosque and close to the Galata Bridge on Istanbul’s historic waterfront.

- Ask for a small paper sample of spices before buying - vendors often let you sniff or taste a sliver of saffron or sumac.
