Northern Atlantic Coast (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country)

By April the coast begins to enjoy clearer intervals and mild days are common, making old quarters in La Coruña and San Sebastián pleasant for wandering. Migratory birds are active along estuaries and the surf scene perks up as sea conditions moderate; festivals such as Bilbao’s cultural events start to pick up. You can comfortably eat outside on sheltered terraces between showers, though afternoons may still need a sweater. Accommodation prices remain lower than summer, so it’s a smart time to visit if you don’t mind some rain.

The Pyrenees & Pre-Pyrenees (Baqueira, Benasque, Aínsa)

April brings slushy snow at valley altitudes and increasingly dry, long spells at lower elevations; high passes can still be snowbound and some mountain roads remain closed. Hikers in Aínsa and Benasque rejoice as trails clear, waterfalls swell from meltwater, and wildflowers appear in meadows below 2,000 metres. Spring skiing ends at many resorts, but the combination of empty trails and warming weather suits early-season climbers and photographers. Expect variable trail conditions and pack gaiters, waterproofs and sun protection for bright, intense mountain sun.

Interior Meseta & Madrid (Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid)

April moves toward comfortable spring weather with blossoming fruit trees across Castilla-La Mancha and pleasant walking temperatures on the Meseta. Cities warm enough for outdoor dining; Toledo and Cuenca are ideal day trips with manageable crowds outside Easter week. Occasional cold snaps still occur, especially at night, so keep a warm mid-layer for early mornings. Spring is a good season to see wildflower displays on the plains and to avoid the high summer heat of the south.

Mediterranean Coast (Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia)

April in the Valencian Community and Catalonia is often warm and breezy with wildflower season inland and pleasant beachside temperatures for sunbathing on calm days. Festivals such as Valencia’s Feria de Abril-style events and Catalonia’s Sant Jordi add cultural interest and moderate crowds. Spring storms can still punctuate the month, occasionally causing rough seas and temporary ferry cancellations to the Balearics. Pack light layers for warm days and a windproof as evenings can be cool and blustery along exposed capes.

Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera)

April is a pleasant shoulder-season month with long days, wildflowers on Mallorca’s slopes and comfortable temperatures for sailing or exploring Dalt Vila in Ibiza. Tourist services ramp up, but beaches are still peaceful compared with July-August. The Tramuntana can still blow and create dramatic seas on the north coast, so check marine forecasts before setting out on excursions. Bring light layers, sunscreen and a windproof for sea-exposed walks.

Andalusia & the Guadalquivir Valley (Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Costa del Sol)

April is one of the best months to visit Andalusia: orange blossom scents the air, patio festivals bloom in Córdoba, and Seville hosts the Feria de Abril (timing varies) with bustling evening life. Day temperatures are warm and ideal for exploring the Alhambra without the searing heat of summer; though nights can be cool, terraces are pleasant. Expect strong demand and higher prices around festival dates; book restaurants early. Pack layers and comfortable shoes - mornings and late evenings will still need a jacket.

Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura)

April offers consistently warm, sunny days and excellent conditions for diving, windsurfing and coastal walks around Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Sea temperatures rise and smaller island excursions run regularly; north-slope clouds clear later in the day to reveal blue skies. The Teide area on Tenerife is cool and crisp; if planning a summit sunrise, bring warm clothing. Light clothing for daytime and a jacket for evenings or mountain trips suffice for most visitors.
