South Luangwa National Park
National Park Riverside park famed for walking safaris and wildlife
South Luangwa National Park follows the Luangwa River with oxbow lagoons, hippo pools and dense predator populations. Tourists favor walking safaris, guided night drives and intimate riverbank wildlife encounters.
South Luangwa National Park is an extensive wildlife reserve in eastern Zambia dominated by the winding Luangwa River and its floodplain. It is internationally respected for wildlife densities and for its pioneering role in guided walking safaris.
The river and adjacent swamps and woodlands support large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippos and numerous antelope species, along with strong predator populations including leopard. Walking safaris and vehicle game drives both provide frequent close wildlife encounters.
The valley’s value for wildlife conservation was recognized in the 20th century and the area was progressively protected to conserve ecosystems along the Luangwa River; lodge-based tourism developed around guided walking and photographic safaris. Management emphasizes low-impact tourism and habitat protection.
The park lies in eastern Zambia’s Luangwa valley within Muchinga Province, reached from regional airstrips and towns that serve as gateways for lodge-based visits.
- Walking safaris: Walking safaris originated in this region; guided walking is a primary way visitors experience the park's wildlife and ecology.
- Best season for game viewing: The dry season typically concentrates animals along the Luangwa River, improving viewing rates for predators and large mammals.
What to See #
- Luangwa River: The Luangwa River corridor that forms the park's lifeline and supports large hippo and crocodile populations as well as riverbank game concentrations.
- Main camp and lodge areas: A number of well-known camp and lodge areas along the river that serve as bases for walking and vehicle safaris and for night drives.
How to Get to South Luangwa National Park #
South Luangwa National Park is most easily accessed via Mfuwe Airport, which has regular domestic flights from Lusaka and other Zambian hubs; most visitors fly into Mfuwe and transfer by vehicle a short distance to camps/lodges inside the park. Overland from Lusaka is a long drive of roughly 500-600 km (8-10 hours) along the Great East Road and feeder roads; this route is used by self‑drive visitors but expect long distances and limited services. Within the park lodges arrange meet‑and‑greet transfers from Mfuwe or the park gates - walking distances from lodge drop‑offs to accommodation or trails are usually short.
Tips for Visiting South Luangwa National Park #
- Prioritise a licensed walking safari - South Luangwa is world-renowned for walking game drives and they reveal behaviors and smaller species that vehicle safaris miss; book with experienced operators based in Mfuwe.
- Plan your visit in the dry season (roughly July-October) when animals concentrate along the Luangwa River and visibility for game viewing is highest.
- Consider staying at a remote bush camp or a smaller lodge away from the main Mfuwe corridor if you want fewer vehicles and more exclusive wildlife encounters.
