Soufriere Hills Volcano

Volcano Active volcanic complex on Montserrat, Caribbean island

Active and closely monitored, the Soufrière Hills Volcano reshaped Montserrat after 1995; visitors travel for guided volcano tours, ash-covered ruins in exclusion zones and rugged coastal viewpoints.

Main image

Soufriere Hills Volcano is an active stratovolcano on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. The volcanic complex reactivated in 1995 and the highest summit, Chances Peak, reaches about 915 metres above sea level.

The volcanic landscape includes dome complexes, pyroclastic flow deposits and large areas of ruined infrastructure; much of the southern half of the island was reshaped by eruptions in the 1990s. Public access to affected areas is restricted, so most visits involve viewing the volcano from northern parts of Montserrat or from licensed boat and helicopter tours that operate outside the exclusion zone.

After centuries of dormancy the volcano reawakened in 1995, prompting the establishment of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory the same year. Major eruptive activity, including dome growth and repeated dome collapses that generated pyroclastic flows, occurred through 1995-1997 and caused widespread evacuation and destruction of infrastructure, including the burial of the capital Plymouth.

The volcano occupies the southern sector of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Lesser Antilles. Its eruptions forced most of the population to relocate to the northern part of the island and underpin ongoing hazard management and monitoring efforts.

  • Elevation: The summit reaches roughly 915 metres above sea level and is commonly referred to as Chances Peak.
  • Access: Large parts of southern Montserrat are within an exclusion zone and access is regulated; most public viewing is from the island's northern safe zones or by licensed boat and helicopter tours.
  • Monitoring: Continuous monitoring has been in place since the volcano reactivated in 1995, with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory issuing alerts and hazard information.

What to See #

  • Chances Peak: Highest summit of the volcanic complex at about 915 metres, shaped by repeated dome growth and collapse during the 1995 onward eruption sequence.
  • Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO): Set up in 1995 to monitor the renewed activity, provides continuous seismic and deformation monitoring and issues hazard maps and public alerts.
  • Plymouth: The island's former capital on the southern coast that was largely destroyed and buried by pyroclastic flows and ash during the 1995-1997 eruptions and remains abandoned within the exclusion zone.

How to Get to Soufriere Hills Volcano #

Montserrat is reached most commonly by air from Antigua (V.C. Bird International Airport, ANU) via small inter‑island carriers to John A. Osborne Airport (MNI) at Gerald’s. Flights are irregular; check schedules and book in advance. Ferries also run from Antigua to Montserrat’s Little Bay when sea conditions permit. From the island’s northern settlements, hire a local taxi or join a guided tour to reach approved volcano viewpoints (the drive from Brades/Little Bay to lookout points takes roughly 30-60 minutes depending on road and access restrictions). Always confirm local access with the MVO and licensed operators before setting out.

Tips for Visiting Soufriere Hills Volcano #

  • Check the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) updates before travelling - activity levels and access restrictions change often.
  • Book any visits or guided hikes through licensed local operators in Little Bay or Plymouth‑area viewing tours; do not attempt to enter the exclusion zone without permission.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera with a decent zoom-the most instructive views are from distant lookouts; ash falls are possible, so include a light mask if activity is noted.
  • Combine a volcano lookout with a visit to the ruined capital, Plymouth, from safe vantage points; ask locals about the narrative of loss and resilience.

Best Time to Visit Soufriere Hills Volcano #

Visit during the dry season for the most reliable viewing and boat connections. Always check volcano activity advisories; access can be limited on short notice.
