Sõrve Lighthouse
Tower Historic lighthouse marking Saaremaa's Sõrve Peninsula
At Sõrve Lighthouse on Saaremaa’s southern tip, photographers and birdwatchers visit the tall beacon, observe migratory routes and explore wartime fortifications along the peninsula.
Sõrve Lighthouse sits on the Sõrve Peninsula at the southern tip of Saaremaa island in Saare County, Estonia and functions as an active coastal navigation aid marking the approaches to the Irbe Strait and the Gulf of Riga.
The site offers coastal views across the Baltic Sea and is a good point for seabird watching and shoreline photography. The lighthouse and surrounding headland are modest in scale compared with major continental lighthouses but are locally significant for maritime navigation.
The headland has hosted successive navigational lights; the location has been used historically to guide shipping through the Irbe Strait and along Saaremaa’s southern coast. The current structure serves the same practical purpose as earlier lights at the site.
The lighthouse is located on the Sõrve Peninsula on the southernmost part of Saaremaa island in western Estonia, within Saare County. The nearest larger settlement on Saaremaa is the town of Kuressaare, on the island’s central west coast.
