The Sorolla Museum in Madrid is the former home and studio of the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla and now houses a permanent collection of his works and personal effects. The property includes the house, studio spaces, and a landscaped garden created by Sorolla.

The museum’s displays concentrate on the artist’s paintings, sketches and family collections, arranged in the rooms of the house and the main studio. The garden and studio windows are integral to the presentation, reflecting how Sorolla worked and exhibited in his own home.

After Sorolla’s death the house and its contents were bequeathed for public display, and the property was converted to a museum in the decades following his death. The layout preserves the domestic and studio spaces to give a clear sense of the artist’s working environment.

Located in Madrid’s Chamberí district. From Plaza de Colón walk northwest ~15 minutes (about 1.2 km) or take Metro lines 1/9 to Gregorio Marañón and walk 8-10 minutes. Buses 3, 21, 45 stop nearby on Calle de Alcalá.

• Enter through the garden gate on Calle General Martínez Campos to avoid the ticket-line crowd.
• Visit late afternoon: the north-facing studio light in Sorolla's main room softens the portraits.
• Don't miss the tiled pantry (despensa) and the original studio tools - people often hurry past them.
