Songo Mnara
Archaeological Site Medieval Swahili trading town ruins, UNESCO World Heritage
Small coral island off Tanzania’s Lindi coast with 14th-16th-century Swahili stone ruins and mosques; a UNESCO site visited for archaeology and coastal scenery.
Songo Mnara is an archaeological island site off Tanzania’s southern coast in Lindi Region, known for well-preserved Swahili-period stone ruins including mosques, houses and tombs. The settlement dates mainly to the 14th to 16th centuries and reflects Indian Ocean trade networks.
Visitors encounter coral rag stone buildings, a compact urban layout and decorative stone and wooden features such as carved door lintels and mosque elements. The Great Mosque and surrounding house foundations show the island’s role as a regional trading and religious centre during the Swahili coastal era.
Archaeological work and conservation have highlighted the town’s urban plan and material culture; Songo Mnara was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 alongside Kilwa Kisiwani for its testimony to Swahili civilisation.
