Son Doong Cave
Amusement Park World's largest cave passage, enormous caverns and river
Son Doong Cave, within Phong Nha-Ke Bang, is the world’s largest known cave by volume; guided expeditions expose vast chambers, an underground river and pockets of jungle. Access runs through licensed operators.
Son Doong (Hang Sơn Đoòng) is a natural limestone cave in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in central Vietnam, known as one of the largest cave passages in the world by volume. Its main passage reaches very large cross-sectional dimensions - ceiling heights up to about 200 metres and widths around 150 metres in places.
The cave system was formed by river erosion of limestone over geological time. A local forest ranger reported the entrance to outsiders in 1991 and a British-led survey expedition mapped and publicised the cave system in 2009, after which scientific surveys and regulated tourism were established.
Son Doong sits within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in central Vietnam, in the interior karst region west of the coastal city of Đồng Hới. The cave is accessed via jungle trails and river valleys from nearby villages and park entry points.
- Permits and tours: Access is by multi-day, guided expeditions run under permit; visitor numbers are strictly limited and trips include camping inside the cave.
- Best time to visit: Best visited in the dry season - roughly February to August - when interior routes are safest and river levels are lower.
What to See #
- Show route and skylights: A show-cave route and camping zones used by licensed expedition operators; the public route covers sections of the main passage and the two large skylights where natural light reaches the cave floor.
- Hang En campsite: Hang En - a neighbouring cave and common campsite on multi-day treks, with a large entrance chamber used for overnight camps during Son Doong expeditions.
- Main passage and river: Underground river and main passage - the river-carved tunnel stretches for several kilometres with ceiling heights reaching roughly 200 metres and widths up to about 150 metres.
How to Get to Son Doong Cave #
Son Doong Cave is inside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and is accessible only as part of an organized, multi‑day expedition run by licensed tour operators. Expeditions originate from Phong Nha village (or nearby bases) after you travel to Dong Hoi by plane or train and then transfer to Phong Nha.
You cannot visit Son Doong independently; book an official tour well in advance (permits are limited), and the operator will arrange road transfers from Dong Hoi/Phong Nha and the multi‑day trekking logistics to the cave.
Tips for Visiting Son Doong Cave #
- Son Doong is accessible only by official multi‑day expeditions run under a strict permit system; check the authorized operator's (Oxalis) schedule and book well over a year in advance because places sell out fast.
- Expect a remote, multi‑day jungle approach from Phong Nha/Dong Hoi and plan travel time accordingly (flights to Dong Hoi or Hanoi plus road transfers); expedition packages include most technical gear but confirm inclusions before you go.
- Because group sizes are limited and the trip includes camping inside the cave and long portered treks, prepare for minimal facilities and follow all organizer safety briefings - there are no independent or ad‑hoc visits permitted.
Best Time to Visit Son Doong Cave #
Visit Son Doong in the dry season (roughly February-August) when cave access is most reliable - and book far in advance because permits are strictly limited.
