Solfatara is a shallow volcanic crater and active fumarolic field located near Pozzuoli in the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) west of Naples, Italy. It is characterised by steam vents, sulfur deposits, fumaroles and altered ground typical of solfataric activity.

The site displays ongoing geothermal activity rather than recent lava flows, with visible steaming vents, bubbling mud and sulfurous smells that indicate hydrothermal processes beneath the surface. It is part of the larger Campi Flegrei caldera system, a complex of volcanic and geothermal features.

Historically the Solfatara area has been visited and described since antiquity for its fumaroles and mineral springs; more systematic geological study has taken place in modern times as part of studies of Campi Flegrei. The crater itself is a remnant of past volcanic episodes with continuing low-temperature volcanic gas emissions.

Solfatara sits just outside the town of Pozzuoli in the Campania region of southern Italy, within the Naples metropolitan area; it is accessible by road from Pozzuoli and Naples and lies inside the broader Phlegraean Fields volcanic zone.

The Solfatara crater lies in the Phlegraean Fields near Pozzuoli, west of Naples. By car from central Naples it is about 15-25 km and typically a 20-40 minute drive (via the Tangenziale/A56 and local roads) to Pozzuoli; from Pozzuoli follow local signs to the Solfatara site where parking and a short walk bring you to the crater rim. Alternatively take local rail (Cumana/Circumflegrea) into Pozzuoli and a short taxi or bus onward.

• Visit Solfatara during official opening hours and stick to marked paths - the crater area emits volcanic gases and authorities restrict access for safety.
• Go earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat and stronger sulfur odors; guided or supervised visits provide safer viewpoints and better interpretation of the fumaroles.
• Approach from Pozzuoli and allow time for the small archaeological park and interpretive displays - facilities and access can be seasonal or subject to temporary closure for safety checks.
