Soknopaiou Nesos

Soknopaiou Nesos is an archaeological site in the Faiyum region of Egypt that was a Greco-Roman temple settlement associated with the deity Soknopaios. The site is notable for its ruined temple precinct and for the documentary material recovered there.

On site visitors or researchers find the remains of the temple complex and surrounding settlement, with foundations, pottery and inscribed material documenting daily and religious life. The written finds from the site have been important for understanding local administration and priestly activity in the Faiyum during the Greco-Roman period.

The settlement was occupied chiefly during the Hellenistic and Roman eras and declined in later antiquity; archaeological work in the late 19th and 20th centuries uncovered the surviving structures and documentary material now distributed in museum collections.

Geographically the site lies within the Faiyum Governorate on the edge of the Faiyum oasis, southwest of the Nile valley and within the wider agricultural depression of the region.
