Sofala
Archaeological Site Historic coastal town and former Portuguese-era port
Sofala on Mozambique’s central coast began as a Swahili trading port and later drew Portuguese interest; shoreline fortifications and estuarine channels record centuries of maritime commerce. Visitors study ruins, tidal flats and local fishing communities.
Sofala is a historic coastal settlement and former Swahili trading port in central Mozambique’s Sofala Province. It was an important regional emporium and gateway for trade in gold and other inland goods during the medieval and early modern periods.
The shoreline site contains traces and ruins associated with the old port and the later Portuguese presence, set beside a small modern harbour and fishing community. The location is primarily of interest for its archaeological and historical associations rather than large tourist facilities.
Sofala developed as a Swahili trading port from at least the second millennium CE and served as a coastal outlet for inland gold and other commodities. Portuguese navigators and settlers established a fort and trading post in the early 16th century as part of their Indian Ocean trade network, after which the site gradually declined as other ports and colonial centers rose.
Situated on Mozambique’s central Indian Ocean coast in Sofala Province, the site lies on the shoreline of central Mozambique and faces the Indian Ocean.
