Soberanía National Park protects lowland tropical rainforest along the Panama Canal corridor east of Panama City and is noted for its biodiversity and accessibility from the capital. The park conserves forested hills, river valleys and roadside fragments that harbour a wide range of wildlife.

The park’s most frequently visited feature is the Pipeline Road and its network of trails, which attract birdwatchers, naturalists and photographers seeking forest species and mammals. Short trails, overlooks and Gatun Lake shoreline provide additional wildlife viewing and boat-accessed possibilities.

The park was established to protect remaining rainforest along the canal corridor and has become an important recreational and research area for Panama City residents and visiting naturalists.

Soberanía lies immediately north and east of the Panama Canal and is most commonly accessed from the town of Gamboa and nearby access roads off the Pan-American Highway.

Tips for Visiting Soberanía National Park #

  • For birding, start at Pipeline Road (Camino de Oleoducto) at first light-this stretch is world-renowned for species diversity and is busiest early, so very early starts increase sightings and reduce encounters with other groups.
  • Enter the park from Gamboa or the main Soberanía access points and consider hiring a local guide for targeted birding or mammal searches; guides know seasonal hotspots and can often relocate rare species that casual visitors miss.
  • Combine a short Soberanía hike with a visit to the nearby Gamboa area (e.g., Panama Canal viewpoints) in the same morning to maximize travel time-weekday visits are quieter than weekends when local visitors increase on popular trails.

Best Time to Visit Soberanía National Park #

Visit in the drier months (December-April) for easier hiking and better conditions for birdwatching and short treks.

Drier months
Dec-Apr · 24-30°C
Less rain makes trails and birding easier and mosquitoes somewhat less intense-good for daytime hikes.
Rainy months
May-Nov · 24-30°C
