Soberanía National Park

Soberanía National Park protects lowland tropical rainforest along the Panama Canal corridor east of Panama City and is noted for its biodiversity and accessibility from the capital. The park conserves forested hills, river valleys and roadside fragments that harbour a wide range of wildlife.

The park’s most frequently visited feature is the Pipeline Road and its network of trails, which attract birdwatchers, naturalists and photographers seeking forest species and mammals. Short trails, overlooks and Gatun Lake shoreline provide additional wildlife viewing and boat-accessed possibilities.

The park was established to protect remaining rainforest along the canal corridor and has become an important recreational and research area for Panama City residents and visiting naturalists.

Soberanía lies immediately north and east of the Panama Canal and is most commonly accessed from the town of Gamboa and nearby access roads off the Pan-American Highway.

• Birdwatching tip: Pipeline Road is a prime birding area within the park and is best visited at dawn when many forest species are most active.
