Soay
Island Remote Scottish island near St Kilda, important seabird colony
””
Soay is a small, uninhabited island in the St Kilda archipelago off northwest Scotland, known for its feral Soay sheep and for seabird colonies. The island is part of the wider protected St Kilda group, which has international conservation designations.
On and around the island there are seabird colonies and unmanaged moorland habitat; the remnant sheep population is of particular biological interest. Visitor landings are limited and usually take place only as part of organized, permitted trips because the archipelago is a protected nature reserve.
Soay was used historically by St Kilda inhabitants for grazing and seasonal resource use; the main St Kilda settlement was evacuated in 1930 and the islands have since been managed for conservation. The sheep population on Soay has persisted as a remnant of earlier agricultural practices.
Soay sits within the St Kilda archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, hundreds of kilometres west of the Scottish mainland and several dozen kilometres west-northwest of North Uist.
- Soay sheep: Home to the primitive breed of Soay sheep, which descend from animals kept on the island for centuries and are a focus of scientific and conservation interest.
- Conservation status: Part of the St Kilda archipelago and managed as a protected reserve, with restricted or controlled visitor access to protect wildlife.
How to Get to Soay #
Soay (the Soay of the St Kilda archipelago) is very remote and accessible only by boat. Visitor and wildlife trips to St Kilda (including landings on Hirta and occasional visits to Soay) run seasonally from Stornoway and other Outer Hebrides ports; crossings are weather dependent and landings are controlled by the National Trust for Scotland, so travel must be arranged with an approved operator.
St Kilda lies roughly 40 miles (≈64 km) west of the Outer Hebrides; expect a long sea voyage and no regular public ferry service - plan with specialist boat operators.
Tips for Visiting Soay #
- Soay (Inner Hebrides) is most easily reached by booking a wildlife or charter boat from nearby Skye departure points such as Elgol; landing can be limited so confirm permissions with the skipper.
- Plan visits for calm mornings when the sea is quiet; boat trips often combine Soay with nearby sea‑bird and seal viewing, and the best animal sightings typically occur on early trips.
- Visitors often miss the island's dramatic views of the Cuillin and the chance to see seals and seabirds up close-bring binoculars and ask your boat operator about safe landing spots and local rules.
Best Time to Visit Soay #
Aim for late spring to early autumn for the most reliable weather and transport when visiting this Scottish island.
