Dùn
Island
Uninhabited island in the St Kilda group noted for dense seabird colonies and steep cliffs; visits occur via organised boat trips focused on wildlife and conservation.
Dùn is an uninhabited island in the St Kilda archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, known for its steep cliffs and seabird colonies. It forms part of the wider St Kilda group, which is protected for its natural and cultural significance.
The island is primarily visited by scientists and conservation staff because of its dense breeding populations of seabirds, including gannets and puffins, and its important seabird cliffs. Landings are restricted outside licensed research and conservation visits to avoid disturbance.
Historically the St Kilda islands were inhabited until the 1930 evacuation of Hirta; Dùn itself has no permanent historic settlement but features in the ecology and cultural history of the group. Management and access are overseen by conservation authorities in Scotland.
Geographically Dùn lies in the North Atlantic as part of the St Kilda archipelago, several tens of kilometres west of the Outer Hebrides. It is characterized by sheer sea cliffs and exposed maritime conditions.
- Protected status: Part of the St Kilda archipelago and included in the St Kilda National Nature Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage designation for its natural values.
- Seabird breeding site: Home to dense seabird colonies - including large populations of gannets and puffins - and entry is tightly controlled to protect breeding birds.
