Bratislava & the Danubian Lowland (Southwest)

Summers in the lowland are warm to hot - July and August often reach the high 20s to low 30s°C - and humidity can make the city feel sticky, particularly in concrete areas of Bratislava. Afternoon thunderstorms break out from time to time, briefly halting walks along the river or visits to Devin Castle; public pools and the Danubian islands are busy. For wine tours and outdoor dining, evenings are long and pleasant but bring sunscreen and a hat for midday.

Southern Lowlands & Wine Country (Nitra, Komárno, Tokaj fringe)

May is warm and comfortable for vineyard walks and river excursions: daytime highs often reach the high teens to low 20s °C, and terraces of small towns fill with locals eating outside. Occasional thunderstorms build inland in late afternoons but tend to be brief; it’s a great month for open-air markets, visiting Komárno’s fortress, and sampling early-season wines. Pack breathable layers and a hat for sunny afternoons.

Central Slovakia: Low Mountains and Hill Country (Banská Bystrica, Low Tatras foothills, Veľká Fatra)

May turns the hill country pleasantly mild-warm, sunny afternoons appear regularly and valleys around Liptovský Mikuláš fill with blossom and new growth. Mountain trails become more accessible though higher alpine routes may retain patches of snow; the Demänovská cave system is reliably open and a good wet-weather option. Expect fewer crowds than in summer, and bring good hiking boots and a windproof jacket for exposed ridgelines.

The High Tatras & Northern Mountains (Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, Poprad)

May often offers dramatic contrasts: alpine meadows near the tree line begin to bloom, while higher summits hold late snowfields. Trails below 1,200-1,400 m become reliably walkable, allowing access to gorges like the Hrebienok waterfall circuits; yet some higher scrambling routes remain closed or dangerous. Pack a mix of summer and warm clothing, and schedule summit attempts for clear, calm days rather than hazy afternoons.

Eastern Slovakia: Slovak Paradise, Spiš, and the Košice Basin

May warms beautifully across eastern Slovakia, and trails through the Prielom Hornádu and other gorges are in fine condition for walking and canyoning. Košice’s parks and café terraces fill out and it’s a good month for combining city culture with day hikes to Spiš Castle and the Slovak Paradise trails. Expect occasional showers; bring comfortable hiking shoes, insect repellent and a compact rain shell.
