Slovak Ore Mountains

The Slovak Ore Mountains (Slovenské rudohorie) are a mountain region in eastern Slovakia, lying within the broader Carpathian system and containing a number of upland ranges. The name reflects a long regional history of metal ores and mineral extraction.

The area includes forested ridges and river valleys and has been the site of mining activity over several centuries, which shaped many local settlements and transport routes. Various subranges and plateaus within the region present typical Central European mountain terrain with mixed woodland and pastures.

Historically the range’s mineral resources were exploited in different periods by local and regional powers, leading to the development of mines and associated towns. Over time, some former mining areas have been abandoned or repurposed for forestry, tourism and outdoor recreation.

Geographically the Slovak Ore Mountains lie within the Košice administrative region and are part of eastern Slovakia’s highland and mountainous landscape, draining into regional river systems and bordering other Carpathian units.
