Skipton Castle
Castle Well-preserved medieval castle in North Yorkshire
Norman‑era castle founded in the 11th century, one of England’s best‑preserved fortifications. Visitors tour battlements, medieval rooms and the market town that grew around it.
Skipton Castle is a Norman stone castle in the market town of Skipton, North Yorkshire, built from the late 11th century and in continuous use through the medieval and post-medieval periods. It is one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in England.
The site includes a large stone keep, extensive curtain walls with towers and an enclosed bailey; many internal medieval rooms survive and are presented to visitors. The castle compound is used for guided visits and hosts public events in its courtyard and grounds.
Originally established soon after the Norman Conquest, the castle developed over centuries as a defensive stronghold and manorial centre. It retained military and residential functions through the medieval period and later became a heritage site open to the public.
The castle stands in the centre of Skipton town, adjacent to the historic market area and within easy walking distance of local shops, rail services and the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.
- Access inside the castle: Interior floors and staircases date from different periods and can be uneven; some rooms are reached by narrow staircases and low doorways.
- Visitor services: The castle hosts public events and demonstrations in the courtyard and grounds during the summer season.
What to See #
- Great Tower (keep): The stone keep or Great Tower forms the core of the castle complex and remains one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England.
- Great Hall and service rooms: The Great Hall and medieval service rooms survive within the castle and are open to the public as part of the visitor route.
- Curtain walls and bailey: Curtain walls with corner towers and a surrounding bailey define the castle precinct; the outer defences remain largely intact and enclose a courtyard used for events.
