Skansen
Museum Open-air museum showcasing Swedish folk culture and animals
Skansen on Djurgården combines an open-air folk-museum with rescued historic buildings, costumed interpreters, craft demonstrations, and Nordic animals-popular with families and cultural-history visitors.
Skansen is an open-air museum and zoological park on Djurgården island in Stockholm that showcases historic Swedish buildings, craft demonstrations and native Nordic wildlife. Founded in 1891, it was the first open-air museum of its kind and presents rural and urban heritage from across Sweden.
Exhibits include relocated farmsteads, a historic town quarter, craft workshops and seasonal events such as midsummer and Christmas markets, alongside enclosures for moose, reindeer and other northern species. The site is arranged as a walkable cultural landscape with costumed interpreters and scheduled demonstrations.
Skansen was established by Artur Hazelius in the late 19th century to preserve traditional Swedish buildings and customs as the country modernized; it continues to operate as both a museum and a public park with year-round programming. Management focuses on conservation, education and living-history interpretation.
The museum sits on Djurgården, an island and park area immediately east of central Stockholm, within easy reach of the city center and major museums.
